Please live within 20 miles of Los Angeles or I can't respond.
I’m comfortable with my life, but it would be so much better if I could find someone with whom to share it. I'd really love to fall in love again.
I’m down-to-earth but romantic. Practical but dreamy. Serious but fun. Shy but disarmingly funny. A good listener but also a good debater. I live in jeans much of the time but I also love to dress up. I love vintage pin-up style clothes (I'm curvy, as in Sophia, not Oprah) and I can rock an elegant evening gown if the occasion calls for it. I was told by one guy that I look prim and proper--believe me, I'm not prim. I'm cuddly, affectionate, sensual and sweet. But I've got an edge (most people think I'm from NYC, even though I'm a native of L.A). I’m sensitive, loving, loyal and passionate about people and the world, and I think I have a lot of good things to give in a relationship.
You: a smart, interesting, funny, involved, evolved, nice man. If you’re passionate about what you do, that’s even better. You don't have to be rich, but please have a means of support (your own) and actually be able to go out and have some fun. Sense of humor required. Caustic wit--so much the better. Sarcastic is fine--I am too. I don't suffer fools gladly, and that includes you guys who "like," wink or make me your favorite and then don't follow up. Come on, if you're afraid to talk to girls what are you doing on a dating site? Also, if you make a date, KEEP the date. Whatever happened to old-fashioned manners?
I’m a dance teacher (second career). Don’t let that scare you--I don’t need to find someone who dances. I get quite a bit of that in my work. But if you like partner dancing, great. If you don’t dance and would like to learn—that’s fine too. I teach Argentine Tango (the real thing--not the junk that passes for it on "Dancing with the Stars.") I've recently started swing dancing, which I don't teach, and it's major fun--and goes with the vintage dresses. And who can resist '40s swing music and '50s Rock-n-Roll? You've got to get up and move. But I repeat--you don't have to dance.
My first career was in the non-profit world. I was a professional organizer and Executive Director. I’m progressive in my politics, a news junkie, watch MSNBC and love Bill Maher, The Daily Show and Colbert. So if you’re a decent, caring, empathetic person who would like to see the world evolve into a more peaceful, just and rational place, we can talk. If, on the other hand, you are a conservative or--eeek!--Tea Party member, love Rush, Hannity, Beck or any of those other right-wing screwballs and are looking for your Ayn Rand/Sarah Palin/Ann Coulter dream girl, that's DEFINITELY not me.
I love movies--old classics, current major releases and indies. Live theatre is great. Music--jazz, classical, Great American Songbook, rock from the ‘50s to the ‘80s (no metal), vintage Latin. I love trying new restaurants and like a wide variety of food (with a few restrictions). I can enjoy a favorite taco dive, burger joint or a for-real grown-up nice restaurant. I also enjoy cooking when I have someone to cook for.
My reading tends toward non-fiction--particularly the history of L.A. This city is MUCH more interesting than most people think. I read my L.A. Times every day and prefer holding a book, newspaper or magazine IN MY HANDS—ink stains and all. I just can’t get used to reading newspapers on line. Recent reads: A Bright and Guilty Place (excellent), Broken Government (John Dean), Free Lunch (by my friend David Cay Johnston), L.A. Times, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Mag, and "How to Tell If Your Cat Is Planning To Kill You." Really--NY Times best seller. It's hilarious!
Favorite places: Buenos Aires, New Mexico. California coast, Santa Barbara. I'd love to go to Spain. Closer to home: Downtown L.A, Arclight, Aroma Cafe on Tujunga, Mercado on 3rd, Pasadena, Culver City, anywhere you can get a good salad. And my neighborhood (Fairfax), despite the really annoying traffic.
Some of my favorite things: Film Noir, orchids, pilates, a good burger, 1981 Dodgers, Trio Los Panchos, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, Motown, early Louis Armstrong, The Eagles, Steely Dan, Roy Orbison, Springsteen, Mad Men, The Good Wife, Daily Show, Colbert, 30 Rock. Art Deco Colonial Revival and Mediterranean buildings. Oh, and passionate kissing.
I’ve been out of the dating scene for some time—finally jumping back in. I’m new at online dating, so I’m viewing this as a little adventure. Who knows? E-mail me if you’re interested in talking, maybe getting together for coffee/tea/lunch.
